ABOUT THE
FILM
Love: The Movie is a short experimental romantic comedy that breaks
down the formal elements of cinema and shows, in its own special way, that
love and filmmaking arent all that different.
Its the story of two sweet college kids named Bill (Robert Berliner)
and Aphrodite (Rachel Chadderdon)a story brewing in the mind of a passionate
student Filmmaker (Carolyn J. Siegel). The Filmmaker introduces a new cinematic
element at every turncinematography, sound, editing, etc.to highlight
a change in the budding relationship between the pair of lovers.
Bill and Aphrodite meet, go on a date, have awkward conversations, share a
first kiss, and, finally, realize its the true love theyve always
longed for. Then, this being a movie, stuff blows up and its really
cool.
ABOUT THE
PRODUCTION
Love: The Movie was funded by a mini grant from Studio 22 Productions,
a student-run production company at Northwestern University - School of Communication.
Shooting took place on April 23 and 24, 2004 right on the NU campus in Evanston,
Illinois, with a cast and crew of primarily NU undergraduates.
The film premiered on June 5, 2004 to a sold-out auditorium in a celebration
of student film.
STATEMENT
FROM THE DIRECTOR
I can say without a doubt that creating Love: The Movie has been the
most significant experience of my life. Admittedly I dont have much
of a life. Making movies is my life.
And this is a very special film because it combines my personal passionfilmwith
the greatest passion of all.
The message of this movie is earnest to the point of corniness. And thats
as it should be, really. Love is a very corny, cheesy, silly thing. I certainly
wouldnt have it any other way.
Moreover, love is not something reducible to one story, one couple. Love is
by its nature an abstract and universal phenomenon. That is why Bill and Aphrodite
are deliberately kept two-dimensional. They are blank slates. These good-hearted
people could be anyone you know or anyone you see walking down the street.
By disallowing the audience to focus on the messenger, we allow them to concentrate
on the message.
I dont actually believe that love and film are as inextricably linked
as this piece suggests. But I do believe its fair to combine the passion
of filmmakers with true love. Because I truly love Love: The Movie,
and I hope the world does too.
