GENERAL INFORMATION

ABOUT THE FILM
Pat Gets a Cat is a romantic comedy about a lonely young man who adopts a cat and imagines it as human.
Patrick Levin (Morgan Beck) has always been lonesome, but he resolves to better his situation and find companionship. So he winds up at the animal shelter, adopting his very own furry friend—an adorable kitty named Princess!
But that very same day, he meets a beautiful and mysterious young woman named Katrina Fells (Emily Mark). Suddenly every time he looks at Princess, he sees Katrina. She meows, she sheds, she purrs, she doesn’t play fetch.
Pat improves his social skills taking care of his new cat—but will he ever figure out how to actually see her as a cat again? And what if the only way to break the spell meant finding the real Katrina… and telling her how he feels?

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
Pat Gets a Cat comes from the directing sequence in the radio-television-film department at Northwestern University – School of Communication. The sequence, an exclusive program for seniors and graduate students to direct a short film, produced ten shorts that year.
The idea took shape in director Adam Bertocci’s mind in fall 2003, but it wasn’t until 2004 that a whirlwind preproduction period officially took off. Shooting took place January 14-16, 2005 in Evanston, IL, with a cast and crew of NU undergraduates—plus some cats.
The film premiered on May 26, 2005 to an appreciative crowd of humans.

STATEMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR
Ever since high school I’ve had an idea in my head of a human actress playing a cat, an image I always found hysterical. I suppose it was because I had a cat growing up, and I had some great times amusing and annoying him.
But my gushing love of kitties isn’t the only autobiographical element in this film. I’ve had my share of times where I felt alone, friendless, a social wreck, and with each wave of this experience came a realization of how much I needed other people to get along.
I think Pat Gets a Cat is a very funny film, with the gag of girl-as-cat never failing to amuse me (probably more than it should). But I think the emotion and the drama is supported, not undercut, by the comedy. They go hand in hand, or at least paw in paw.
I think I picked the right note to end my student film career on. As I go out into the real world, I’ll be thankful if the rest of my work shoots half as smoothly or turns out half as well as Pat Gets a Cat.
I don’t see why it shouldn’t, since I’m planning to never work with animals again.
